Our big chance to host 2018

July 30th, 2007 | By: Rayed Mamun | 8 Comments »

It is over ten years away but our chance to host World Cup 2018 will probably be decided sooner than we think. We must hope that FIFA continues to keep its current rotation policy to ensure Asia gets 2018. According to Sepp Blatter if the rotation continues, CONCACAF or AFC will get 2018, effectively ruling out England’s bid. He also went on to say that America (North and South) can be considered as one continent, ruling out our other major threat USA. Fingers crossed, and hopefully we can host our first World Cup!

I’ve herd alot of negative opinions about australia’s stadiums are not good enough to hold the world cup. but here is the solution to what stadiums they should use and how they should referbish them.

1. MCG - MELBOURNE (Yarra Park) - 100,000 (reconfigure if poss, if not leave it as it is). (4 Group Stage Games, 1 Quarter-Final, The World Cup Final).

2. Telstra Stadium - SYDNEY - 90,000 (expandable to 90,000) (4 Group Stage Games, one 2nd Round game, 1 Semi-Final).

3. Stadium WA - PERTH - 60,000 (Current new all purpose stadium being planned in perth) (4 group stage games, one 2nd round game, 1 semi-Final).

4. Telstra Dome - MELBOURNE - 56,347 (Reconfigurable for rugby and football games) (4 Group Stage Games, 1 Quarter-Final).

5. Suncorp Stadium - BRISBANE - 52,500 (Perfect structure for football games as-well as rugby) (4 Group Stage Games, 1 Quarter-Final).

6. Hindmarsh Stadium - ADELAIDE - 50,000 (Expand main grandstand around the whole the ground to expand stadium from 16,500-50,000) (4 Group Stage Games, 1 Quarter-Final).

10. Skilled Stadium - GOLD COAST - 42,000 (Newly being built stadium could be expanded from 25,000-42,000) (4 Group Stage Games, 1 Second Round Game).

11. Stadium NT - DARWIN - 41,000 (Build A completely new all purpose stadium in Darwin with convertable roof as weather over there can be very hot and wild) (4 Group Stage Games, 1 Second Round Game).

12. Aurora Stadium - LAUNCESTON - 40,000 (Expand, Upgrade and Possibly reconfigure stadium from 23,000-40,000 so it has a slightly similar look to hanover stadium (WC 2002 Stadium).) (4 Group Stage Games, 1 Second Round Game).

One big problem guys. What are we gonna do about the AFL/NRL seasons? The World Cup must be during June/July…..

If Australia is good enough to host a rugby world cup and the Olympics, we’re good enough to host the World Cup. The stadium issue is a non-starter. Keith outlined all the perfectly good stadiums that could be used with minor upgrades to satisfy the security and crowd control requirements of FIFA.

As for the football seasons, it does pose an interesting question. What happened during the Olympics? There would need to be a haitus for a period of time to allow the pitch surfaces to recover to FIFA standards. The domestic football leagues/codes would have to re-arrange their schedule for one year. I can imagine they would not be happy about that.

Bearing in mind that June/July will be our winter there may be some FIFA provision to play the WC later in the year. There is not much wiggle room in the world club schedule.

We could also do a co-host with New Zealand, but I don’t think that’s a good option.

I hope Australia’s bid for 2018 is sucessful as I have being talking it for the past 5 years. In hope I have started a highly speculative venture and obtained numerous domain names in anticipation of developing a business around the World Cup and all world cups that Australia hosts in the meantime.
