Record breaking Socceroos

The Socceroos have rocketed into the top 20 in the latest FIFA rankings. A successful end to our World Cup campaign, including wins over Bahrain and Japan, saw the Green and Gold jump a mighty 13 places to be in our highest ever ranking of 16th.

We are now firm leaders in Asia, with our nearest rivals Japan dropping nine places to 40th, followed by South Korea at 48th and Iran at 58th.

Brazil’s successful Confederations Cup means that they are now at the pinnacle of the rankings, followed by Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Russia, England, Argentina, France and Croatia.

Congratulations to the boys, keep up the good work!

So that means we are a sure thing for the Round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup now! Since the World Cup always follows the form guide…..

The FFA needs to organise friendlies against European (we have Ireland and the Netherlands locked in already) and American oppositions, as Pim and the boys will need as much exposure to continental game as possible to get used to their style of play. We’ve topped Asia, or at least strolled through out qualifying, but we lack experience against nations from other regions who play distinctively different styles. Top 16 is a great feat, but as you said Mr J it means diddly squat when the real thing come around. It’s a great achievement by the team, but I think realistically any higher is out of the question at the time being. If we can spend the next five or so years consolidating our position in the top twenty then I’d be very happy.
