Australia

Who is our Rooney?

Haha. While England sh1t themselves over the boy wonder and his broken foot, it got me thinking, who could Australia least afford to lose at this crucial stage leading up to the World Cup? The usual names first come to mind, the Kewells and Vidukas etc.

However, for me it would be Marco Bresciano.

He has been in blistering form this season at Parma and saved them from defeat on many occassions. Also, he has now become an integral part of the national side and he and Grella look good together controlling our midfield. He is also a solid and consistent performer. I think when it comes down to it, while Kewell and Viduka can create and score goals, so can Bresciano, however the front men can’t exert as much control over things as Bresc can.

A big part of our potential success and getting through the group stage will be control in the centre of the park, and being able to provide the service to the forwards. For me there is no one else in the squad who can command like he can and provide such dominance.

Anyway, what do you guys think? I am sure people will agree and disagree with me, so I am interested in what people’s thoughts are, and who is that one player for them who we can not afford to lose in the next 37 odd days.

Midfield players are always going to be the key to any World Cup campaign. Even the deadliest strikers in the world are reliant on half decent service (see Shevchenko). The player who makes the crunching tackles in the middle of the park, distributes the ball well and always goes looking for the ball will be invaluable. Bresciano has excellent experience playing in a great league and he is indeed the player Australia cannot afford to lose.

I hate the thought of us playing without Cahill.

For me it is Viduka, not becuase he is one of Australias biggest names but how he plays on the pitch. He holds the ball up and defenders back better then anyone in the world and becuase of this his teammates can run off him and hopfully set up a goal.

Viduka is very good. However, having watched Viduka a number of times in games for Australia he has gone missing on a lot of occassions. He is like Kewell, on his day he can be the match winner but he lacks the consistency people want to see in him.

Guy’s, if you loose someone to injury you can always have Anthony Šerić back. He apparently longs for his homeland.
