Where To Watch Matches?

May 31st, 2006 | By: Matt | 33 Comments »

While Europeans have the luxury of being able to watch matches during daylight hours and consume beer while the sun is still out, Australians will be stuck with cold winter nights and trying to keep awake until the crack of dawn. My question to you is, where do you plan on watching the games? It is a tough situation. Do you sacrifice your warm bed or house, to drive to the pub and watch it with other football nuts, or do you setup camp at a mates place for the month long festivities. Especially for the big matches, it is a tough question. Personally, I will be heading into town to watch the Australian games with all the other diehards, but watching the rest at a mates where I can relax and knock back a few tinnys at the same time.

How do you guys plan on getting through World Cup month?

I’m in Melbourne and will be heading to Fed square for the big aussie games but was planning on having a few mates over for some of the other matches (ie: England games – the Netherlands vs Argentina game on the 22nd, Portugal vs. Mexico etc etc). Unfortunately i only have a 68cm regular TV – Would be great to hire a great big LCD or plasma for a month or so.. Anyone know of anyone offering this?

Yea marco, every game is pretty much shown on paid tv. Some games are on simultaneously so for these I will stay home and flick channels…i think people are just discussing where they are heading out to. For the gameday atmosphere…

Marco, SBS is showing every game live apart from one of the quarter finals I think it is. Every other game is shown at a seperate time to cater for TV audiences.

I feel for you folks back home in Oz. I am living over here in London and ALL group games are going to be shown on terrestial TV here. That’s right, all games, including Tunisia vs Saudi Arabia!

But I do feel for you guys as I was visiting Perth during Euro 2004 (I now live in London) and had to head to the sports bar at the casino to go and watch the games at the ungodly hour of 3am.

Anyhow, having said all that, here’s hoping for a great performance in Germany from the Socceroos!!!

Where is the best venue in Sydney (city) for live games? Any idea’s? I heard the Shelbourne hotel will be good for the world cup but it’s $20 a game!

I need a massive screen and sound! Where are the Green and Gold Army going?

Apparently I heard that Star City Casino in Sydney hosts every match except they only let a certain number of people into the area (with the big screen). Pubs around there are available but will only stay open if they have enough people (they never said how many). I also saw Cheers Bar (561 George Street) advertising that they play every match live on their screens. Else you can find many pubs and bars which are mostly opened almost 24hrs. normally around there. Hope to see some of you there then!

I have been watching the games at Jacksons on George at 176 George St, Sydney. They are broadcasting all the games live over 32 screens (including two big screens) 24 hours a day.

The last two Socceroos games have had a fantastic atmosphere and everyone has been really getting into the spirit.

If you go to the following link you can print out two for one drinks. http://www.jacksonsongeorge.com.au/sports_central.html

I have children who all play soccer and although we have watched the games from home I want them to experience the excitement and atmosphere as they did when the Olympics were in Sydney. Can anyone tell me where there is a big screen in Sydney other than in a Pub as I really want to take them in for the Australia vs Croatia game.

I’m still looking for a decent bar in Melbourne city/eastern suburbs to watch the Italy game. It has to be open ’til 3am too. Not Fed Square either. Any suggestions?

CAn any one with Francophone tendancies tell me where the contingent francais de Sydney, will watch the game versus Bresil?
In the Past , the Hilton owner was French, and it was the Bastion FRancais during 1998.
Bondi may also be a spot ?
Any ideas?

We (as the French contingent) watched the game at Home Club with the Brazilians…. a lot of fun.

This time, against Portugal, we will watch it on the screen at the Customs House, Circular Quay

As a keen French supporter I know that I should avoid the streets of Leichhardt on Monday morning, but is there a decent place where the French are planning to get together for the big final? Surely it’d be good to hear a good old “On est les champions”…

Any ideas – suggestions?

Cheers
