Wilson Hopes SPL is Ticket to WC
Add Lindsay Wilson to the list of players who have switched clubs in an effort to improve their chances of playing in the World Cup. In Wilson’s case, he has been loaned to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premier League.
“The first priority is just to play,” said Wilson. “I’ve spent the last six months not playing a lot. To be playing in the national team, you have to be playing regularly at a decent club or else you don’t get a sniff.”
Wilson still has an outside shot of making the Socceroos, but first he will have to show coach Guus Hiddink that he is fit and in form. He had that opportunity playing under Hiddink at PSV Eindhoven, but never completely won the manager’s confidence and as a result his minutes were limited.
I agree with Wilson that there will be competition to decide who will be part of Australia’s backline in Germany, but at this point I’d have to say that his chances of landing a spot on the team remain slim.
