Will Viduka Quit after the World Cup?

June 4th, 2006 | By: Vlado | 3 Comments »

It’s quite possible that Australia’s captain might hang-up his boots, for the national squad at least, after the World Cup.

Viduka said that Australia’s performance at the World Cup would influence his decision but the prospect of increased travel as the Socceroos attempt to qualify for next year’s Asian Cup may convince him to call it quits.

It’s hard for me to be away from my family for a couple of days… I can’t imagine how it would be for weeks or months on end. I couldn’t begrudge anyone retiring for those reasons, but, that said, IF he does retire, I’d love to see him do a Dwight Yorke and come out of retirement to guide his nation to the world cup in four years time.

I hope he does retire, I think he has been taking Aloisi’s spot for years now, and I am sure we would have scored a lot more goals with Aloisi as the target man rather than Viduka. He wastes a lot of opportunities! But more importantly, after this world cup the coach needs to bring a bit of youth into the squad if they want them to keep competeing at a good level for the next few years!

Dukes has been a great forward for the Aussies (especially recently) but i don’t think he’ll be able to keep going till the next WC, so it would be better to let more young guys (like Alex Brosque, Josh Kennedy and Archie Thompson) get some international experiencebefore the next World Cup
