Touchdown In Germany

June 6th, 2006 | By: Matt | 7 Comments »

Overnight our boys arrived in Stuttgart, Germany ahead of their match against Liechtenstein on Wednesday and the World Cup. The town where they are headed was said to have been covered in Australian flags, as well as kangaroos and koalas in shop windows. I was quite amused when I read what the town’s mayor said about the team.

“The people are happy we have a nice team here – no problems, no skinheads,” Kubler said.

“We are friends to the Australian team and we hope they will get more power from the region to go into their first game.”

Countdown to Japan has begun.

The prime minister, John Howard, is getting in early with the congratulations with his statement: “I just want to congratulate the Socceroos on a terrific performance to hold The Netherlands to one each, given the Dutch are ranked number three…very good, very good performance,” . It was a friendly, Mr Howard. It wasn’t a World Cup game. Stick to your cricket and wear your rugby jersey during your early morning walks – we know where your try heart is, and it isn’t football – unless there’s a photo opportunity somewhere, sometime, for you to be seen on the front page. I doubt Mr Howard knows which country The Netherlands represents.

Yeah I have an exam at Uni 4 hours after the Brazil game. Little time for sleep. At the end of the day the World Cup comes around every 4 years so it is all worth it.

No Australian skinheads for Germany to worry about… just some semi-conscious drunks with blown-up kangaroos lying in the gutter. ;)
