To The Next Round
Yes. The Socceroos side of 1974 has come out and said that the 2006 crop of players can make it to the second round. The first Aussie side failed to make it beyond the first round, but there is belief that this year we can do what they didn’t. The focal point being the first game against Japan.
“We definitely have the players capable of doing that.”
“But we need to beat Japan.”
I believe we can do it as well. There has been constant talk since the group draw about can we or can’t we, and what results we need.
If we look back at the ‘74 side, they were amateur players whose reputation for kicking a ball would have come out of the pub. Look at 2006, and this squad are professional athletes at big clubs and earning big dollars.
If a bunch of amateurs can make the Cup in ‘74, a bunch of professionals can go one step further in ‘06.

And if we’d been handed a group like Spain’s or France’s, we’d have a much better chance of making the second round. Brazil and Croatia are gonna be real tough to beat out. But the Japan game will be key. A good result first up will give the lads confidence and take some of the pressure off.
