Team News For Tonight
There isn’t a great deal of news about regarding who will and won’t start tonight. While we have speculated Harry will get a run in the second half, it appears he is set to start. Alongside Kewell in an attacking/midfield role looks to be Cahill as he also appears to be getting a solid run ahead of Japan. I have a feeling Schwarzer will still keep the gloves for tonight, and I am certain Aloisi will get a good deal of game time, as well as Popovic. Other than that there isn’t a great deal of indication as to who will and won’t start. More to come if I get my hands on it.

i think brazil played this team in the frist friendly and won like 10-0 .. if australia dont emulate that and only win 2 or 3 nil then i think every one should calm down about beating brazil .. if they can win 10-0 tho then there is hope

Australia should have one thing on their mind……..JAPAN! All our hope is on this one game. I am already nervous and I hope that despite the positive build up the team is mentally ready to give it everything they have.

this game doesnt matter, basically its about finding our best team for japan. i dont hink the score line matters. its the chances we create and the run. definatly marking as well. this game doesnt decide whether we beat brazil marco. i know you just want to provoke the soccer faithfuls into an argument. even if we lose 10 nil against japan. that doesnt mean we will lose to brazil. its the mental approach we bring to the game. anyone can beat anyone on the day if they are mentally right. it only takes 1 goal.

For once I agree with Marco (on the second post).
For the Holland game, many said how great a draw is – blanking out (and giving me a hard time for mentioning it) that Holland was the way better team and should have won by a margin.
And now for the Liechtenstein game it shouldn’t matter. This will probably be the case now, that the display was anything but convincing. The same people will say ‘It was important to finish the tests with a win. It was just a test. Etc.’.
In my opinon the tests haven’t really supported Australians optimism for the WC:
- Greece was in a shocking form. The Socceroos didn’t really creat chances even against this more than mediocre opponent. Any team at the cup will be stronger than Greece.
- Holland. Good result. But clearly overstrained by the Dutch. The midfield had little to hold the Dutch and the defensive wasn’t looking hip either. Australian chances were few and most of them not really stringent.
- Liechtenstein. Had a hard time to dominate a fringe team on the scene. Struggled with Liechtenstein’s offensive ‘onslaught’ – especially in the second half. Postitive: scored three goals and came from behind.
Judging on this, I’m not really sure if all that optimism is justified. Monday will tell, I reckon.

I can’t believe it either Adrian but I agree with Marco’s second comment too. The result does matter. It always does, just as the way you achieve the result matters too. They go hand in hand. 3-1 was not a great result and the way they played to get this didn’t sound encouraging either. Just shows we don’t have as much depth as we might have been lead to believe.
I think our starting 11 really pick themselves, the bench will be interesting.

The game with Liechtenstein was a practice match to give a few players a run, to stretch the muscles of Kewell et al., It would have been mentally destroying if Aust. had lost, but to win 3-1 with a lacklustre performance and no inner will to do better is a good result. If I am asked to run 100 metres for nothing, mentally it would be difficult to put 110% effort into it, but offer me $1000 and watch me fly. Watch the Socceroos fly when they play Japan – mentally they will be ready, physically they will be ready and the players’ adrenaline will be high – let’s all hope they will succeed.

.. how can you say that .. a frendly or a proper match a week out from ur opening game is hugely important .. if your not ready a week from the start of the WC you will not be ready for it at all .. only team to every prove this thory wrong is italy and there dumb for never putting in 100%

How can I say that, Marco? Easy, it’s fact in football. Why do you think friendlies are called friendlies? A team uses them to practice, 100% effort is never put in. You can have so many substitutes in friendlies. Not so in real games. If you don’t know the difference you will soon see the difference in effort when the real games begin. Some teams are not ready until one hour, before kick-off on who will play.
