Ref Makes Harry Lose His Kewell

June 20th, 2006 | By: Matt | 40 Comments »

For those of you who are unaware of the Kewell situation, after the Brazil game he blew up at the ref and called him the biggest Brazil supporting f*ckwit in the stadium (or something like that).
The ref wasn’t happy that he was caught out, so he reported the incident to FIFA for disciplinary action.

“Officials confirmed Kewell had been asked to submit a written explanation by 9am tomorrow morning Germany time (5pm AEST) and said a decision on any sanction would be made before the game against Croatia (4.30am on Friday AEST).”

It was not only Kewell who was peeved off at the ref’s decisions.

“Hiddink also walked a thin line during the game, often throwing his hands in the air in disgust or complaining to the fourth official, Costa Rican Leonel Leal.

At one stage it appeared as though the Australia coach was going to be ordered off the bench close to the end of the first half after he threw a bottle of water to the ground in anger after another mystifying ruling.”

We will soon find out if the Croatia game will be that much harder without Kewell in it.

Maybe football’s new number one supporter, good old Johnny H, can pull a few strings.

i thought the reff was gonna card him in the game .. well i think he will still get punished coz u cant do that … And why is every one saying that the refs favors brazil when brazil got 3 yellows and australia 2 .. and when grella should have got a red but more realistically a yello for the tackle on ronaldo. i think every one hase to remember that the refs alwasy favor Brazil england and germany, but on the whole the ref was not bad .. considering the fact that on average i recon most games so far have had like 10 cards given out with just about most games having at least 1 red

ohh and you also gotta remember this .. for Aus to get past group of 16 they will prob have to beat italy or ghana .. which seems unrealistic .. even ghana has a very strong team (in my opinion top 6 in the WC)

And if you think that is getting robbed .. italy have lost the ossibility of winning WC’s and chmpions leage so many times coz of the refs .. ask the argintinians how the ref cheated for germany to win in 1990 or how once gain the ref cheated for germany to beat holland .. so trust me the ref wasnt to bad .. if anything could be said its that it cold have been much much worse. look at it this way, if england play germany in second round they will lose, due to the fact that germany as the host ntion dont want there team to go out in second round!

They’ve just announced FIFA has cleared Harry to play against Croatia…

Close one, could’ve been gone for up to 4 matches.

Pheeew! Great news. I don’t know what he was trying to achieve, even if he had a point (and I would say he did) it was poor sportsmanship. When I think of sportsmanship I always think of Pat Rafter.

I didn’t think the referee robbed Australia of the match, rather it was down to their failure to take their chances. Hope Guus works on this against Croatia.

And I agree Ghana has a really strong squad, it’s just the inability to take all of their chances. They could easily have beaten the Czechs by four or five.

Croc Dundee, it is obvious you are not a football supporter, you come onto this site to stir. Be a good little boy, go away and play marbles.

I found it amazing that Kewell was charged with professional misconduct for his discussion with the referee after the game.

I fully agree that someone should have been asked to answer a case of professional misconduct.

I don’t think that should have been Kewell……………

Don’t bother with the trolls. They get their kicks when people respond.

As I said before, I think Kewell deserved a yellow for dissent or a fine because his response was really over the top. But I’m very, very relieved he didn’t get a match ban. Bans should be for things like vicious elbows to the face!

Apparently there were 2 mitigating factors;

The match officials gave differing accounts of the incident to FIFA.

The ref wouldn’t talk to Viduka during the game about any of his decisions, which he’s supposed to do because the other players aren’t allowed to talk to the ref, just the captain.

Then you add the fact that Kewell doesn’t have a history of this kind of behaviour and… bingo! Cleared.

hayy kewell did the wrong thing, no questions about that. however the question must be asked why would a profesional player who has played with the best in the world feel the need to lose his cool at the ref. as far as i’m concerned the ref must have deserved it. the ref was really bad, and australia should lodge an official complaint into his conduct. he was obvious in his support for brazil. either the ref beleives in what he reads and hears about australia or he placed a bet on brazil. for australia cops a decision pretty well when deserved. so i have no doubt that there must have been something up for the players to go nuts like they did. these players play in some of the best leagues in the world in front of some of the best refs. so why would they play rough or not be used to the decisions when given. surely cahill, viduka and co wouldnt go i’m playing for australia now lets get physical. its ridiculous and the ref should be stood down for his performance. these players play for there lives and to have deserved opportunities taken away from them by a ref who is easily influenced by what a couple of teams say. pretty poor i say. every team should be given an equal shot at winning. if he umpired that way towards brazil the ref wouldnt either be living now or he wouldnt have seen the second half of the match. one rule for the big boys and one for the new commers. i bet the benifit of the doubt has gone against other unknown teams like togo as well, not just australia.

Oh and I agree with Dan. We wasted many opportunities. The ref didn’t lose the match for us, even with the questionable fouls. We need to stop complaining now, be positive and work on plugging our weaknesses before the Croatia game.

also for the record the ref should have walked away and told kewell not to say a word or he will be booked. simple. the ref by arguing only fuelled any point kewell was going to make. probably in this case was where he would like to insert the refs whistle.

Guys, I know most of you are great contributors on here, but as you know there are one or two morons who post stirring remarks and are just a nuisance. Please ignore these comments. Ive been keeping a close eye on the comments lately and removing those which are unncessary and contribute nothing to the discussion. Just don’t bother with them and I will take them off as soon as I can. Cheers.

if anyone should have talked to the ref it should have been viduka, he`s the captain, so he`s the spokesman. i think harry owe`s us a goal for the one he missed against brazil. we`ve got so many players who can score great goals, i just hope they can show the world what they`re made of on friday morning. btw i was born in the uk and lived there for 21years, and after watching the last two aussie games, that flag has got to go, it just dont make sense to have all these young enthuseastic aussies waving a flag with the union jack on it, australia has earned it`s place on the world stage and therefore should be waving an ALL australian flag. go aussie!!!

It’s all relative,Joe. Kewell abused one person,Merk, for about 1 minute, whereas Merk abused 11 players, Australia, for over 90 minutes. Now, tell us who has got away with it? Got the answer? That’s why Kewell was let off.

Merk wouldn’t hear Viduka out, OK?

Harry lost his cool and that was wrong of him. But ask why Merk took no consideration of FIFA’s rule to hear the captain out?

No wonder the Roos were mad.
