Tony Popovic’s calf injury means he will not play against Croatia on Friday, nor will he be likely to ever play in another World Cup Finals ever again. At 33 it appears Popovic has done his dash, the injury proving to be a sorry way to bow out of World Cup football.

At least Poppa can say to the grandchildren that he played in the WC. Some greats can’t even say that (ala Mr Ooh Aah Cantona, now Mr Jogo Bonito, heart, honour).

Tony’s been a great credit to the team, his loss creates an extra hole in our defensive stocks with the other Tony (Vidmar) retiring due to a heart condition. It’s even worse as he has Croatian heritage and won’t play Friday. To both Tonys, thank you for your efforts and cheer the lads on Friday!
