Moore Caught in Club Versus Country Conflict

February 24th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 3 Comments »

It turns out that Craig Moore won’t be in Guus Hiddink’s training camp next week in Holland. The Socceroos centre back was denied permission from his club team Newcastle. Moore has been injured for seemingly years now and hasn’t played for Newscastle’s first team after joining the club this past summer. Says Glenn Roeder: “But I have told Australia that Moore will not be allowed to play for them until he has played for Newcastle United. In fact if I did let Moore go out Holland this week it would be a really poor professional decision. What would I say to our fans and my chairman if Moore went and broke down again?”

This a classic example of club versus country and since I am on the side of country I must say that Roeder needs to get a clue. Moore deserves a shot at representing his country this summer and without a chance to show his stuff to Hiddink he will not be able to achieve this goal. Sure Newcastle pays the bills, but frankly Roeder’s team sucks anyway and I doubt that Moore is going to do much to change that.

If he’s not fit to play for Newcastle, why would he be fit to play/train for Australia? Is Moore the best player to take to Germany if he’s not going to be 100% fit, or more of a chance to break down?

I thought there was a FIFA directive that prohibited clubs from not releasing their players for international duty. Is that just for games?

Because it is only a training camp, Newcastle can turn down the request. My understanding is that Moore is working his way into fitness so I don’t see what harm it would do to have him train with Australia.

Roeder is just protecting his own hide. If Craig went across to train at our camp and broke down, he’d be grilled by the Geordie fans who have endured more than their fair share of injuries this season – not to mention the defensive donkey that is Boumsong!
