Mark Schwarzer vs Zeljko Kalac
One position where Australia have some depth is goalkeeper. Mark Schwarzer is one of the better keepers in the English Premiership for Middlesbrough and of course was one of the heroes in the qualifying win against Uruguay. Zeljko Kalac is showing his worth at AC Milan with the Italian club’s regular keeper Dida out with injury. Kalac was probably one of the top three keepers in Serie B last year.
So who should Guus Hiddink choose?
My guess is he’ll stick with Schwarzer because he receives more regular club minutes and because he has more experience with the Socceroos. But if it were up to me, I would go with Kalac. I think he is the better overall keeper and is less prone to making mistakes.
Who would you go with?

You have to go with who ever is in the best form. Schwarzer used to have more of a reputation for making blunders, tho he was never in the David James category. But he’s come a long way during his years with Boro. Kalac they call the Spiderman and he’s definitely a solid ‘keeper. It’s definitely a toss up and I don’t think there’s a downside for picking either one. It’s a nice luxury to have since against Brazil, one of them is going to get a lot of exercise.

There is no question about it that were it not for Mark Schwarzers performance in both legs of the URU-AUS matches Australia would not even be in the position of debating which one of the two keepers will be the no.1 Against Holland again Schwarzer is what kept us from a humiliating result. Seems an easy choice.

Well I think it’s obvious now, but Schwarzer is 10 times better than Kalac at the moment. Kalac is a reserve goalkeeper for AC Milan, so he never gets a game. So he has lost a lot of his confidence in goal. Who cares how tall you are if you can’t hang on to a regulation save, you gotta go. And I totally agree with Monica, against Netherlands, Schwarzer was at his best, Kalac is nowhere near Schwarzer’s ablities at the moment. I’m not even going to mention the Croatia match. But, if you watched the Australia v Greece friendly, you never would have put Kalac in goal in such a crucial game as that!
