Let’s face it, football is so dominated by acting and cheating that a team that doesn’t cheat and act is at a massive disadvantage.
This has been allowed to go on so long that now every team doese it, some teams are better than others at this aspect of the game.
This is FIFA’s fault to allow the sport to become like this and that referees are so bloody stupid that they fall for this acting 90% of the time. Im sick of watching dives and people that look like they are dying when they were barely touched only to be awarded a penalty and they are up and running around as if nothing happened. I cannot believe the stupidity of ref’s.
They need video ref’s and should be able to red card people for next matches after a video review of the game after it finishes if need be. The game needs to be cleaned up, at the moment its a joke.
But gratz to australia, you guys did well. gratz to italia you did what you needed to do to win (cheat).
and a red card for FIFA and the ref I say for allowing things to be like this.
Vamos Argentina!!!!

@ tomski
We are certainly not new to football and every single one of our players is a dinky di Aussie.
Maybe your embarrassed that you underestimated us.
and no we weren’t robbed but the ref like many other refs in this wc so far made some bad calls on both sides

Those who were watching the game could never say that Italy dominated the game. The pure fact is that even before the red card, they were more concerned with getting men behind the ball and stifling all Aussie attacks than actually creating anything of their own. They weren’t even trying to counter attack with speed, just lump it up to Toni and see what he could do with it. It was old-school English football at its most boring. Sure they created chances, but never were they dominating possession. That’s just ridiculous.
The red card should never have been given. It was a bookable offense but nothing more. Having said that, the dive by Grosso that the ref bit on, hook, line and sinker robbed Australia of extra time,a nd robbed the game of seeing who was the better team. Italy showed nothing in this game. Australia did their best to break down a side that was firmly putting 9 men behind the ball. They couldn’t do it and it cost them the win, but they deserved to have another 30 minutes to do so, not robbed by a bad decision by the referee.

Don’t worry AK I’ve been gunning for the Swiss for a while since the kung fu fest in Istanbul, which was disgraceful. The turks are a bunch of animals, no offence. You guys just like us had a tough and torrid qualfication and well don’t worry u’ll have at least one soccer nut downunder on the swiss bandwagon, but i aint gonna be wearing no Roger Federer cow bells OK!!!
Goodluck against Ukraine and hope u make it through and beat Italy, because if there was ever a team that has disgraced world football with their match fixing, diving and theatrics its the Italians, a disgrace to world soccer and I expect Cantona to come and fly kick these morons as soon as their knocked out. 3 times world champs u might be but Joga Bonito u don’t just like today in the box,and hopefully you don’t make it past the next round because world football would be worse for it. Go the Swiss hope u make it through to the semis. It would be great for football if you guys did. Joga Bonito mate Joga Bonito

Italy is stupid they won with 100% luck, the manager even took out Toni who was playing fantastically, I think the most stupid mentally retarded idiot would not do such a thing.
Aussies are just unlucky as the penalty decision is really a soft one. They are not really aggressive but at least they should deserve a draw.
I hope Italy should be eliminated ASAP, they played extremely boring football, I would consider switching off my TV if I were an Italian.

This was a disgraceful ending to a great match by the Australians. As an Ecuadorian I saw an awful refereeing in favor of England against Ecuador by a referee (He almost called a penalty kick because Beckham requested it) whose fondest memory was quoted as seeing an English club team win a tournament. This time it was Australia’s turn to be robbed in broad daylight. An absolutely invented penalty from a Spanish referee leaves out a team that deserved to win. I agree that changes in refereeing must take place. Video refs would be a good change for the game. Good luck Italy and a massive Bravo!! to the Australian team. AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE! RED CARD FOR THE REFEREE.

Tomski how can you be so insensitive as to lob in here with that bs? Italy claim to have been robbed last wc (I didn’t see the game but if an Italian was sent of for diving, he probably dived).
I predict a Brazillian like dominance of the sport by Australia in 10 -15 years time as the Australian imagination has been sparked. I only hope we don’t learn the lesson of win at any cost displayed by the ‘powerhouses’. Diving is the lowest form of human behaviour and an instant RED should be awarded.

I’ve read a remark about the first half, shan’t say who they are, but they know! They like to write in code.
Statistic for the 1st half. Australia had 59% of the possession. OK, so they weren’t getting behind the Italian 10 man defence, but, having the ball at your feet is paramount.
Australia were doing a damn good job of stretching the Italians during the latter stages of the second half. All substitutions made by Italy. Had it gone to extra-time, as it should have done, Australia had the legs needed to finish the Wops off.
As I’ve said in earlier posts “Welcome to World Cup football and the inconsistency of the officials.” Horrible way to go out, reminded me so much of the “Hand of God” incident.
Australia I look forward to seeing you guys in four years. I’ll still rag you though.

@ Cristiano … Ecuador deliberate hand-ball on the edge of your 18 yard box that wasn’t noticed. I watched that game also.

Phooey, that hand was not intenional. I taped the game and I watched it 4 times after reading your entry. What was intentional was Beckham rolling the ball about 4 meters past the mark where a free kick should have been kicked in front of the referee.(not the one in which he scored. That one was near perfection) The referee was making all sorts of calls against Ecuador and what I saw today with that penalty against Australia was ludicrous.

Injury-prone Kewell was one of the best players to watch just about ever for about six months when he wasnt inured back in his Leeds days. I would never back a team that depended upon his contribution now. He is out for six weeks every time someone sneezes within a half-mile radius of him. Sorry but its true.

We deserve this win, technique and guile is part of our strategy. Forza Italia! Totti basically told the roos that they were still innocent babies (hence the thumb sucking). At the end of the day, its the big boys that always win. Italia and Brazil, a worthy match. Socceross and the Azzurri is more like a training exercise for the Azzurri, nothing more. It was fun, but the real contest is Brazil or Argentina. Sorry roos, just stating a fact here.

@ Cristiano … We could argie this for days and days. The fact remains though. his World Cup will go down in history not for the actual football, but, for the more than contentious decisions. Three yellow cards, Portugal vs Holland sixteen yellows and four reds, two hundred and ninety seven cards in total and we’re not even at the quarter finals. It has been a fiasco!

Pfft Italy will get nowhere near Argentina or Brazil, Ukraine is more than good enough to KO u Italian mofoz out of this WC. We’ll call it the ‘real’ hand of God. The only babies I saw in many a football game were the Italian players crying after they had been eliminated via a penalty shootout or a golden goal, at least the aussies are real men not pussies like the ASS-URI!! Get urself back in the toilet and get ready for prison bitches!!! That goes for ur coach as well, maybe u can practice some real soccer moves instead of 10.5 dives in the box CHEATS!!! or fixing matches.

@ FORZA_AZZURRI111
Do you really expect Guus to reveal who he would play?
Posted from
Australia

Julia, every1 knew kewell wasnt gonna play, I read atleast a day before the match that the media noticed kewell never came to not one training session since the croatia game, strangely enough SBS never mentioned it but fox sport did.
anyway Guus reveled he was in for a fast paced 1st half, wich is why lippi started with del piero rather then totti, so its not like he is too secretive.

Chips on my-Fish and chips on my shoulders…

I love my football, but after watching the australian Italian game, and France and Spain game, I am dissillusioned with football based on the amount of diving. Some people here on the site have said that that materazzi´s red card was harsh. well, so many refs have given straight red for players diving in with studs in the air. So he deserved what he got. But that dive of Grosso over Lucas Neill, that was theatrical to say the least. And that comes from english newspapers.
I´ve been in germany for the world cup and so many people from around the world, (english, german, french, gahnian, argentians) have told me that the italians robbed australia of extra time, based on the diving antics of the italians. They say that we deserved more out of the game.
For so many different nationalities to say such a thing to me says that there is an injustice here. The english fans told me that if that happened against england, they would´ve been most unhappy.
Don´t get me wrong, if italy won 1-0 or 2-0 in regulation time, all the best to them as they deserve it. But Australia deserved extra time at the absolute least. Sure the Italian defence was excellent, perhaps extra time could have proven otherwise.
Which is why FIFA needs to clean up the area of diving. The amount of times you see a stretcher come onto the field AND not be used is ridiculous. It makes me think of the boy that cried wolf. Footballers should think of that story with care, if they have a brain that is. And perhaps FIFA as well…
A dissappointed australian

Let’s just say, Italy doesn’t have a good reputation for fair play right now. Remember the controversey about how Juventus bribed the referee? And of all times. A penalty kick in the last seconds… If you people actually watched, it was a dive for the ball, and not a dive at the player. The italians were playing horribly and they were terribly off form that day. Here’s something for sure. The winner of Arg-Ger will sail through to the semi finals because both Ukraine and Italy can be easily defeated by either Argentina or Germany.
Aussies were playing horribly well. It was just fate that they didn’t get through so, come back next time. Too bad Guus Hiddink won’t be their coach anymore.
