Houllier Linked to Head Job
I wasn’t going to write anything much today, and I will wait until tomorrow to go into detail, but news in England is that former Liverpool and current Lyon coach Gerard Houllier has been touted as a replacement for Hiddink. I’m not sure how true this is, as one of the sources this has come from is that infamous English newspaper, The Sun. Anyway, I am sure more will come of this in the next few days.
I bet the title of the article got your attention.

In my opinion Houllier would be a bad choice as coach. As a Liverpool supporter I know his methods well enough to suggest that he fail with the Socceroos like he did abjectly with France in 1993 and then with Liverpool. At Lyon he is extremely lucky to have inherited a top class team and to his credit hasn’t changed much since being appointed to ensure that Lyon are playing well enough so far. But give him some time……
I agree that he has some talent in spotting young talent and in technical matters. But you have to question his day to day running of a team, tactics and motivational abilities. I would prefer to see someone like Luis Felipe Scolari or even promoting Johan Neeskens to the top job even though he isn’t a ‘big name’ like some of the other coaches being touted.

I agree about the situation with him and Lyon. When he got the job Lyon were already the top team in France and I think it is more down to the fact he inherited a good side rather than his coaching abilities which have seen Lyon dominate this season. Especially since they were winning titles before he arrived.
Also, I wouldnt be too upset to see Hiddinks current staff including Neeskens and Arnold take over.
During their time together I think they have learned a lot from Hiddink, and have proven that without Hiddink alongside (the game versus Bahrain), although it was only for one match, they’ve shown some potential when it comes to the top job.
I still think that in order to develop the game and the players in this country however, we need an international coach with a rep.
