Carney On The Move

January 29th, 2009 | By: Pat | 2 Comments »

dave-carney22Socceroos wingback David Carney has ended his nightmare stay at Sheffield United with a loan move to fellow English Championship side Norwich City for the rest of the season.

After a bright start to his career at Bramall Lane, Carney’s appearances started to dry up, amidst warnings that his spot in the Socceroos squad was in jeopardy due to lack of football.

Rumours were rife this summer of a return to the A-League for the former Sydney FC player, but the speculated move to Central Coast never materialised.

Carney has always been one of my favourite A-League players back in the day (days when Sydney were good…ah the memories!). He had flair about him, and he always backed himself when running at defenders. He was one of the exciting players which ignited the A-League in the first two season.

Although he left Sydney in fairly unceremonious circumstances (we got about $2 in transfer fees for him), Carney remains one of my favourite members of the Socceroos squad. He is an integral part of the nation team set-up, and has produced some scintillating performances for the Green and Gold in recent years.

I hope this move can get his once blossoming career back on track.

Note: The proposed move by Socceroo Scott Chipperfield to Hertha Berlin has been called off due to a foot injury.
