Brazil Game In Brief

June 19th, 2006 | By: Matt | 37 Comments »

Positives
- We matched it with the best side in the world
- We didn’t get thrashed
- Croatia drew with Japan - We need to draw/beat Croatia to qualify for next round
- None of the 4 players in yellow cards will miss the next match
- Our defense held off the majority of Brazil’s attacks
- Ronaldo went for cheeseburgers at half time

Negatives
- Tony Popovic is injured
- Had Kewell scored that sitter of a goal, we would be talking about a 1-1 result

Anything I missed?

That’s if he is found guilty which he shouldn’t be caus it wasn’t threatening an official it was getting his point across that he thought australia were hard done by and i think anyone who watched that game would agree that they were and he was only telling what everyone else thought. I mean I would have luved to have seen the whole team go in and get stuck in to that ref. A few swear words here and there does not mean a threat. Fuck :)

Ok i would like to say one thing .. every one talks about the chances australia missed .. but brazil midded like 10 times more better ones than australia did .. what about kakas header that hit the bar .. if ronaldo was not so fat he would have scored a couple … Also i think this game proved how dumb Hiddink is .. i mean keeping you best player in the bench (breshiano) and then only puting him on when some one got injured … amd before he came on brazil had all the possetion

Ok, I’m going to just ignore the two crazy trolls above because they’re just doing it to get a response.

Now, as the vaguely normal people were saying…

Personally, I think Kewell deserved at least a yellow card for the outburst. He’s supposed to be a professional and has been in the game a long time. I know he was angry but it just went on and on and on and on with a long string of swear words and a good deal of finger-pointing.

I have to agree with matilda. It was extremely unprofessional of Kewell mouthing off at the referee. It certainly doesn’t help the Socceroos shake off the undeserved image that Japan gave us of being rough. It also detracts from the Socceroo’s prima efforts so far.

Marco,

Hiddink knew Australia would at best tie with Brazil, that is why I think he had his best player sit on the bench because he knows the main game will be Croatia vs Australia.

(That’s my guess)

Matilda, second yellows from the group stage do carry through to round 16. True and we have a 6 on them, just like most other teams in the WC (thanks in part to FIFA and their yellow card mandatory. But if you qualify for the round of 16 and you have one yellow card from the first round, it is nullified and you all start from zero again.

Saying that, our boys must lay it on the line against Croatia and not let the yellow cards be a distraction. If they play smart like they did against Brazil (only 2 yellows, Brazil had 3 - that should dispel the myth of us being a dirty team) then hopefully we get out of the game with the result (win or draw) and no yellow to those six (or minimum yellows).

Kewell was probably more upset with his miss and that’s why he gave the refs and earful. I agree with him, I thought the ref gave Brazil the better of the calls (but hey, they are World Champs and we are a rugby and cricket nation innit) but you should not talk to the refs like that. It doesn’t help anyone or change anything.

For all his talent (and I thought Kewell had changed) he shows his spoilt side on the World Stage again. Keep your trap shut and play to your potential.

I was impressed with the Aussies. They have to take what the refree say and get on with the game. I was not going to watch the game. I watached it beacuse of Brazil. You guys got what it takes. Good luck. I will watch them the next time.

a lot of fouls in this world cup… and a lot of cards too. and its so unfair to just target australia alone, isn’t it..? from the beginning of this tournament we have been labelled physical and rough.. i didn’t think any aussie did worse than what the italians did in the us match. if that offence had been committed on the street instead of the field, he would have had quite a time with the law…! i just feel that no matter what we do we will be labelled with that tag. its just UNFAIR.

ANTE,Croatia havn’t scored in their last 4 games other than an own goal from Spain so keeping dreaming, Japan played the better game and ur just fortunate even to be in the running for the last qualifying place let alone bs’ing bout scorelines against the socceroos.

I know I keep saying this (probably making you all sick of it), but Australia’s soccer development reminds me so much of the United States. Your team is already, in its first WC back after a 32 year hiatus (ours was 40), way ahead of where we were in 1990 when we were thrilled just to not get blown out by Italy. Your boys played a great game in München and should have picked up a point, but I really think you’ll at least draw with Croatia and go through.

Jegen, Unfortunately the game against the Dutch is what did it. When the Dutch started calling us a dirty team, everyone else seemed to jump on the bandwagon. Has soccer become a prissy sport now where theatrics has replaced good hard tough play.

It is unfair but we have to cop it on the chin and not complain (like Kewell) and this is the only way to stop the tag. We showed against Brasil we play soccer with skill and a tough edge, a never say die attitude. The Aussie way.

Has anyone picked on the theatrics the Argentine side do. Count the number of times Sorin falls to the ground by himself and gets yellow cards against opposition. Is this worse than Grella’s tackle on Fatso (had to say it)? Damn right it is. Grella was going for the ball (albeit he mistimed terribly and was actually helping Ronaldo out - trying to get him to run - something his coach couldn’t do, lol) whereas players like Sorin who fall at minimal or no contact are doing nothing but bring the game into disripute. Bad sportsmanship that is.

Croatia haven’t scored in their last 4 games, that is true, but they are playing well and creating a lot of chances. With a bit of luck the goals will come.
The game on Friday will be fast and open, may the best team win!

@ Philip. Cheers for the encouraging words. It’s always good for our team to be spoken of in respect. Something I’m sure the US crave and we would like also. Just enough respect to be dangerous.

The next round is in our hands but it’s a tricky one really. Croatia have to win so they will be on the offensive. I know Guus will have plans for this but really we are more of an attacking team than defensive so it will be a bloody tough game.

Saying that, I would rather be in our position than the US. Have to beat Ghana and rely on Italy to beat Czech. Ghana have probably looked the best team in the group - unlucky to lose to Italy and outplayed Czech (Koller & Baros a big factor). Still, Arena should’ve gone for the Win against Italy instead of settling for the draw - Italy were there for the taking (even with only 9 men).

Good luck mate!

Cheers Bigone. I agree, even though their record shows No Goals, they have created a tonne of opportunities (8 against Brasil and 18 against Japan - total of 9 on target). That’s an average of 13 shots a game (4.5 on target). That shows Croatia are having a dig. They are not playing defensive.

In comparison, Australia are creating more chances than Croatia (22 against Japan and 14 against Brasil - 15 on target). Average of 18 a game with 7.5 on target.

If you go on the stats alone, this game should be an attacking affair - no holding back. Just the way the WC should be.

Will be a corker!

Australia could really let us win this one :-)
After all there are a lot of Croatian players playing for Australia, and some Australians playing for Croatia. It would be nice if we could both go through. I belive it will be a very nice game.
Go Croatia!

Ok i don’t know if this was already metioned couldn’t be bothered reading but i think you missed the fact that viduka is off side alot of the time and if chipperfeild had been marking ronaldo properly he would not have scored. That goal forced guus to change his side when i think he really didnt want to.

Like i thought he probably would Harry is off da charges. Woohoo, and as for all u harry haters stuff u morons, u don’t play soccer for australia now do u? these boys go out there and play with their heart and soul against possibly the best team in the world (I ain’t quite convinced yet) and get on the end of a hell of alot of bad decisions and u expect them to just walk away?

I don’t think so, I think Harry won a lot of fans for his display and good on him, he’s been there with the best in both Liverpool’s victories at the FA cup this year and Champions league last year with a only man who is probably the equal of guss hiddink, Raphael Benitez and boy does he luv kewell, u kno why? Caus he plays with his heart just like Steven Gerrard. He is the soul of the socceroos, the heart, he made the difference against Uruguay when we qualified and just having him there even on a patched up groin (caus he’s clearly not even 80%) gives a huge psychological boost to the team and good on him for voicing his frustrations, if no one else had the balls then so be it. GO KEWELL, YOUR A LEGEND!!! and make no mistake he is our Number one player Cahill might have put in the goals against Japan but Harry is the best, its a shame he’s had the injuries at key moments in his career caus he is one of the most skilled players u are ever likely to see. GO KEWELL, GO THE SOCCEROOS!!!

Zeljko, which Australian players are croatian citizens? Don’t you understand? Australian players with croatian surnames had every opportunity to defect to croatia and play. The only ones that did were those that couldnt get a gig in the aussie team. As far as I’m concerned, they are not Australians anymore.

i dont think there is any point to race related remarks. obviously they cant play for australia any more. but croation citizen ship is a key to playing in some parts of europe and there was no garuntee australia was going to play in the world cup as croatia has the ever popular euro competition as well and seems to qualify for the cup every time. so you cant blame players for wanting more opportunity. christian vieri is australian. he chose to play for italy. big deal. who wants players who dont want to play for your country in your side.
