Brazil 2-0 Australia

June 19th, 2006 | By: Matt | 35 Comments »

Apologies for the delayed post. After the game last night I went to bed at 4.30am. Slept for 3 hours. Got up at 7.30am. Sat university exams all day, and now I am home and buggered. Hooroo.

Last night we saw Australia lose to an underperforming and at times vulnerable looking Brazil side. Taking nothing away from Brazil, they won the game, but they didn’t look like the Brazilian team that most of us know, and are capable of being. Australia played really well, we created some good chances, defended well, and at the end of the day we were beaten by the no.1 side in the world.
Brazil’s class was what got the better of us in the end, and the Australian should be congratulated on their performance.

The first 15 minutes was crucial and if we had conceeded then the game would have been won already. We survived a number of attacks and even made a few of our own. We had a good first half and I am sure the boys were confident going into half time at 0-0.
Adriano scored a decent goal, and even though I thought we would start to crumble, we countered them well and had some good shots on goal and near misses. Hiddink used the same tactics as he used against Japan, by putting our attacking men on in the second half and we definitely looked capable of pulling one back. However, we were playing Brazil not Solomon Islands and they managed to keep us out. Brazil did look vulnerable at the back at times, and against an Argentina or Holland they would have conceded. A 1-0 result was looking on the cards and this would have been a great result, but we were unlucky enough to go 2-0 down in the dying minutes. By committing so many men forward to get the equaliser, we were exposed at the back and this is what let Brazil in.

We definitely put in a gallant performance and gave Brazil numerous headaches. If they don’t pick up their game I can’t see them winning the World Cup. Credit to our boys though, we gave it our best shot and we gave them a run for their money. We played as a team and we looked dangerous on a number of occasions. Our defence held up well, and full credit to them.

Is it just me or was the ref blowing his whistle at just about anything Australia did to Brazil?

Possibly the most pleasing aspect of the night, is that Croatia drew with Japan, meaning we only need a draw against Croatia to go through to the next round. After last nights performance, the Round of 16 is in our own hands.

come on! the ref was with brazil? this is the same ref that gave ronaldinho a red card in the last cup and he did give cards to ronaldo and robinho…..the problem is that your guys must remember this is soccer not rugby and their reputation is causing refs to be tough on them. it is good for the sport to keep extreme physical game to a minimum.
I must say that I was impressed by the aussies, they have excellent prospects for the future and please, stop it with the “almost’goals of australia because brazil had three of those…..brazil needs to improve and the difference gilberto, robinho and fred made was obvious. I feel bad for ronaldo but the team is what matters and he should sit out.

I already have a hat. I’ll take the photos of me eating it to post in my blog if Brazil loses to Japan.

I don’t know how you guys didn’t win. Brazil played nothing during the first half.

The ref was on our side because of your violence tradition that was confirmed soon after the match started. Ronaldo was hit so violently that we could read the brand of the Australian shoe at his skin. That guy should be sent off, but the ref didn’t do nothing. You were lucky on that.

At the second half Australia almost scored more than once!!! Good job. But ‘almost’ isn’t a player, so better luck next time!

euler… brazil for all its status as favorites has not played at its best. and i don’t think it ever will in this world cup… That aura of invincibility… THE SHEEN HAS BEEN WASHED CLEAN OUT OF IT… and Parriera’s comments saying we will have a tough time against croatia are surely in bad taste… Brazil, i tell you is going to cop it big time… and most probably against Ghana…!!! Well on that day we might see the player Almost make his big time appearance as Brazil’s 12th man…!!!

I was rooting for the Aussies in this game and I still believe the ref was fair. When the Aussie player was mouthing off to the ref, the yellow card was a fair punishment. At least he didn’t pull out red cards every other second.

Euler,

I hope Japan beats Brazil by 1-0, Ronaldo gets crane lifted off for liposuction (lol - then we all can stop the Ronaldo fat issue and Robinho can play - hey it didn’t take Fred long to score either), Australia beat Croatia 1-0 and have no yellow cards (wishful thinking).

If that happens, then we go through with you guys and we get to watch you eat a hat.

ayl18, the crowd at the footy show weren’t booing & jeering they were chanting Guuuussssss. There isn’t a single Australian sports fan that would think badly of the master coach.

I thought the footy show was the biggest waste of time srsly I mean those dumbass’s who have no idea bout soccer on there like Sam Newman who’s given plenty to soccer players over the years, I wished that guy had’ve punched him in the face instead of the other way around.

As for the ref well lets say the brazilians knew that he was more than on their side caus the slightest touch on the shirt even and they’d go to ground on top of the ball and holdup play caus they knew the referee was there to protect them. Which is bs,Australia should and did feel hard done by and the 25-9 penalty count and Kewell’s actions after the game were indicative of that. He was a german boofhead and thought the brazilians were fairies and it was really an embarassment to soccer that refereeing performance, a total and utter embarassment. I’ve seen many a game and that would probably have to be in the top 10 worst refereeing performances that I have seen.

I mean yes in that USA and Italy game the referee sent off 3 ppl but they all deserved it. The italian clearly elbowed another player, the first USA red card which was a direct redcard was an absolutely horrendous -no ball all chin 2 footed tackle and the second one was a slide tackle from behind again 2nd yellow which could’ve been a direct red as well. That I thought was a good refeering performance even though he did send off the players, they deserved to be but the Brazil,Australia game is very hard to justify. Very hard and I’ve tried caus I’m a referee myself but that was very difficult, infact its impossible to justify. He was just hopeless.

Euler, being a Brazilian, would you rather see Robinho up front instead of Ronaldo, or do you agree with the Parreiras strategy of keeping him on?

Enzo, i’m not saying that they will beat Brazil…. i’m sure that they won’t, but it is pretty unfair to give Japan absolutely NO chance at winning… stranger things have happened, and i’m simply saying that what everyone is saying (ie. if we get a result then we are AUTOMATICALLY in the next round) is a bit misleading… though most likely true… but can you imagine if Japan did beat Brazil and made up for their for/against deficit and we only managed a draw against Croatia… people would hound for the commentators blood (those that claimed it as certain)… also, i don’t trust Brazillians… who knows, they may throw the game to get back at us for our ‘physical’ game…
very very unlikely but it has been done before.. i think in the 70’s… any help as to which team threw the match… they publicly admitted that they lost because they would rather face the team that they purposely lost to as oppose to the team that would have gone through…??

Euler> “But at this point it seems that Autralia will make history going to the next round. Congrats!!!” …..Don’t make me come over there!!

My dearest Aussies…this is gonna be a good game. Australia, I thought, played well against Brazil, a little rough, but well. At this point you seem to have a bit of an edge on us when it comes to finishing, it was unfortunate no golas were scored from your side to Brazil. But I believe that our defense will stop your attacks and if Dado Prso plays his position as a striker, we will prevail….

Sure, Brazil doesn’t need to win against Japan…. but they’ll want to win anyway. The game against Oz was a better performance than the game against Croatia but the Selecao are still copping a lot of criticism. They wouldn’t deliberately lose in order to avoid Australia later on either. That’s kind of silly - we’re no threat to them, they won 2-0 without hitting top gear, they’re thinking about the next round against the Czech Rep, or Italy or Ghana (who are frankly a scarier prospect than the Socceroos).

Japan are a team I have a lot of respect for but I really can’t see them winning by a 2 goal margin.

Croatia is tough but I think we have a better than average chance of winning.

this is getting out of hand. the socceroos have always been supported. but this is the first time a majority of soccer fans in australia have had good exposure to australian soccer. there is always room for more fans. for all those people who say are jumping on the band wagon. thats insulting. because i see band wagon jumping as switching teams from bad to good. that sort of thing. there is nothing wrong in supporting australia. sure some opinions are uneducated but that is just passion talking. every country even brazil would have there supporters who know nothing about soccer. so all those people who want to slag aussie soccer suporters, get a life its only a game. australia is the new team on the block and it scares alot of traditionalists that australia can become a top 10 soccer nation. my prediction is that the socceroos will win a world cup. its when and how soon is the question. but it will take probably two world cups for the effect of australia being in this world cup to take hold. lets hope australia can handle the rush on kids wanting to play soccer. and new clubs are formed to help improve australian soccer. eventually the a league will fill stadiums like aami stadium in adelaide 45,000 plus. world get used to aussie soccer.

I think quite a few can and do know what offside is Shane, fifa have changed the laws since the last worldcup so some individuals who might not follow soccer that much, might be confused as the passive offside feature does apply on occasions which states that as long as the player who is offside is not involved within the play then the goal will count.

I think the best indication of the passive offside law was one of the american goals or non-goals against Italy where there was a player from the US in front of the last Italian defender, and the USA striker, struck a goal past the goalie but only after it went thru the legs of that man who was offside thereby NO GOAL but however if he had’ve been near the post somewhere and not had the ball go thru his legs or not affected the play in any manner it would’ve been a GOAL and the US would’ve won with 9 men lol who would’ve thought that?

Anyway as for ur lebanon comment the day that lebanon beat australia in anything,is the day that Israel wipeout lebanon from the face of the earth so you might just want to mark that down in ur calender somewhere k ;) hehe stick to ur kebabs, ur world ranking of 122 shows u’ve been eating way too many of those, when was the last time lebanon made the WC? Thats right NEVER so maybe when u get to a WC which will be NEVER u can start crappin on until then keep an eye out for those missiles :)

Magic G> You could be right. We seem to be a little light on the finishing front and I am really hoping that our man in charge decides to put on 3 strikers….Aussies have a well rounded team but I think your defense we can beat…but can we finish?

Australia was simply outplayed - Brazil put on a 70% effort and you still lost and that is indicative of the Socceroo’s strength, not good enough to beat a brazilian team operating way below full throttle. Its good the author of the article reminded us of the Socceroos vs. Solomon Islands game where we played out hearts out and lost to a more technically stronger opponent. Same situation against the brazilians but now socceroos was on the recieving end. Had they been operating on 90% as against the Japanese, Schwarzer would be collecting the ball from behind the goal posts more often. However, congratulations to the Socceroos - maybe next time, this time you were simply not good enough to beat the very best in the world.
